Basics of Hide Tanning - January 6th, 2024

Join me for basics to Hide Tanning!  ** THIS IS A BRING YOUR OWN HIDE (if you want) EVENT ! **

Where I will break down the process as we go hands on, step-by-step, start to finish, turning hides into useable material, called buckskin!. As we go through the day you will get the chance to work with hides in various stages of the process. I will provide tips and tricks that will help you through your hide tanning journey, saving you time and some trial and error learning. We will learn the brain tanning and egg yoke tanning methods, as they are similar in process with slightly different results. They are the most used methods, but I will also talk about some other methods that are available to learn about. As we go along the day you will get to see how the deer skin acts in different stages, I will also touch base on other types of hides. Some similarities and differences I have come across between deer, rabbit, cow, coyote and bear hides as I work with them. 

I will be providing lunch catered by the local Hummingbird Cafe! As well as coffee, tea, juice and water. Any allergies please let me know! 

What you need to bring:

Dress for the weather and wear some kind of rain pants for protection against the wet hides as we work as well as gloves. Water proof is best. I will have some aprons and gloves to wear over the clothes you have on, however I still wouldn't wear anything you don't mind getting messy. It's best to be prepared as staying warm and dry helps make the day go by so much nicer! :)
