Intro to Hide Tanning - October 15th, 2023

Join me, Maggie Oickle for an Introduction to Hide tanning. Where I will break down the process with my visual step-by-step guide as we go start to finish turning hides into leather. As we go through the day and information, we have some examples of hides in various stages and tips and tricks that will help you in your hide tanning journey. I will also touch base on other types of hides. Some similarities and differences I have come across between deer, rabbit, cow, coyote and bear hides as I work with them. We will go over the tools required, and some start up items, as well as have an opportunity to stretch a hide yourself as we go into the afternoon.

Dress for the weather and wear some kind of rain pants, as well as gloves for protection against the wet hides as we work. Water proof is best. I will have some extra pair of gloves, as well as a few aprons you will be able to put over whatever you wear. Just make sure you are warm.This is physical labour work, the hides could be damp so to keep us all happier its best if we are prepared and you stay comfortable, warm and dry!

Coffee and tea, water and juice will also be provded with apples and oranges to snack on throughout the day if needed!
